education
New Zealand has a three tier education system comprising Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Institutions.
Some NZ children attend an “intermediate” school between Primary and Secondary School.
Education at Government schools in New Zealand is generally free, apart from fees for course materials and an annual donation to school funds.
The academic year for schools begins in late January or early February and ends in mid December. There are four terms.
Children begin school on their fifth birthday. School is compulsory until the age of 16.
Prior to formal Primary School education, there are Playcentres and Kindergartens that cater for children from birth to 5 years of age.
Senior Secondary School students study for a National exam known as the NCEA.
As well as Government schools, there are also Private and Independent schools. These charge tuition fees as well as fees for course materials.
New Zealand has Universities in the main centres of Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch and Dunedin.
NZ University students can apply for Government student loans and allowances to cover courses and living expenses.
